Eine Familie mit Migrationsgeschichte nimmt teil an der Beratung

To ensure a smooth start to your apprenticeship, you should prepare some important documents and insurance. Here’s an overview of everything you need:

🏦 1. Bank account

In order for your employer to transfer your salary (or training allowance), you need your own checking account. Many banks offer free account models for students, apprentices, and university students.

🏥 2. Health insurance

As an apprentice, you need to have your own statutory health insurance and can no longer be insured through your parents. Your health insurance provider will give you a membership certificate, which you must present to your training company.

🧾 3. Tax identification number

Your training company needs your tax ID so that it can correctly report your income tax. You can find it on a letter from the tax office or request it again at www.bzst.de.

💳 4. Social security number / pension insurance

If you have never worked before, you will automatically receive your social security card as soon as your employer registers you with the health insurance company. If you need it before your training starts, you can request it from your health insurance provider or the German pension insurance authority.

🧑‍⚕️ 5. Health certificate (under 18 years)

If you are under 18 at the start of your apprenticeship, you need a medical examination. The doctor will issue a certificate confirming your fitness for work. The examination is free of charge – the form is available at the doctor’s office.

🧾 6. Certificate of good conduct (optional)

Some employers require a police certificate of good conduct. You can apply for it at the citizens’ office or online: www.fuehrungszeugnis.bund.de

🛡️ 7. Private liability insurance

If you still live with your parents, you may be covered by their family liability insurance. Ask them – if not, it is worth taking out your own insurance. It protects you if you accidentally cause damage.

📄 8. Apprenticeship contract

You must receive a written apprenticeship contract before starting your training. Read it carefully and clarify any questions (e.g. working hours, vacation, probationary period) – the Chamber of Crafts, IHK, or vocational school can help if needed.

📚 9. Registration at the vocational school

Your training company usually registers you at the relevant vocational school. Ask your company whether this has already been done and when your first day at vocational school is.

📆 10. Overview of your apprenticeship start

Ask your training company:

  • When and where is your first working day?
  • What documents or materials do you need to bring?
  • Is there a dress code or special rules at the company?

💬 11. Use language support or tutoring (optional)

If you need additional language support or have learning difficulties, you can contact:

  • Jugendberufsagentur / Agentur für Arbeit
  • Adult education center (VHS) / tutoring offers for apprentices
  • Accompanying training support (abH) or AsAflex

🧑‍⚖️ 12. Residence permit (for non-EU nationals)

Make sure that your residence permit includes authorization for the apprenticeship or is adjusted accordingly. You can get support from the immigration office or from migration counseling centers.
